Membership introductory pricing

Configure free or discounted first renewal periods and understand eligibility, contract effects, pricing order, pauses, and later price changes.

Introductory pricing gives first-time members a free or fixed discounted price for a set number of their first recurring renewal periods. It is useful for offers such as "the first two renewals at €25" or "the next billing period free."

Introductory pricing changes the price of complete billing periods. It does not suspend benefits, shorten a fixed contract, or create trial cancellation rights.

For an exact number of calendar days before the paid commitment begins, use a trial period.

Configuring introductory pricing

Introductory pricing is available only for a membership with Recurring payment.

Open Products → Memberships and create or edit a recurring membership. The introductory pricing controls are in the membership's basic details.

Under Introductory pricing, choose:

  • Free to make the affected renewals free; or
  • Discounted price to charge one fixed, tax-inclusive amount for each affected renewal.

Then set:

  • Number of periods: how many renewal periods use the introductory price, at least one;
  • Introductory price: the amount for each period when using Discounted price.

The introductory period uses the membership's normal billing length. A 30-day membership with three introductory periods receives three complete 30-day periods at that price.

Initial purchase versus first renewal

Introductory pricing begins with recurring renewals, not with the initial purchase.

Without a trial

Join: normal membership price
Renewal 1: introductory price
Renewal 2: introductory price
Later renewals: normal price

With a trial

Join: trial price
Renewal 1 after the trial: introductory price
Renewal 2: introductory price
Later renewals: normal price

This separation keeps checkout, trial terms, and recurring terms visible as distinct stages to the customer.

If the initial purchase itself should be free or discounted, configure a trial period or an applicable purchase discount. Introductory pricing starts on renewal.

Who receives introductory pricing

The offer is automatically assigned only when a customer joins that membership for the first time.

The customer does not receive it again after any previous history for the same membership, including an expired or cancelled membership. Previous membership at the venue does not matter if it was a different product.

Thril checks eligibility after sign-in and at checkout. For an ineligible returning customer, the shop and checkout omit the trial and introductory offer, and normal pricing applies.

Fixed contracts and termination periods

Introductory pricing changes the amount charged, not the member's commitment.

For a fixed contract:

Fixed contract: 6 periods
Introductory pricing: first 2 renewals at €20
Normal price: €40

Without a trial, the initial normal-price purchase is contract period 1. The two €20 introductory renewals are periods 2 and 3, leaving three contract periods afterward.

For an open-ended membership with a termination period, the normal termination rules apply while introductory pricing is active. Cancelling does not remove the required notice periods merely because their price is introductory.

When a trial is also configured, the paid commitment starts after the trial. The first introductory-priced renewal is also the first paid contract period.

Pricing order

When a new member receives introductory pricing, Thril adds it to that member's Pricing order. Staff can later add Goodwill pricing to the same order.

Active prices are used oldest first:

1. Introductory pricing added when membership began
2. Goodwill pricing added later by staff
3. Normal recurring price after both are used

Each card shows how many periods remain and whether it is Next to use, Upcoming, Used, or Deactivated.

One period is used when Thril creates the renewal charge. If the payment requires customer action or later fails, that renewal keeps its introductory amount and the used period is not restored.

Pauses and introductory periods

Whether a pause uses an introductory period depends on whether a renewal charge is created.

SituationCharge createdIntroductory period used
Date-based pause, recurring payments continueYesYes, if next in order
Date-based pause, recurring payments pausedNoNo
Period-based pauseNoNo
Renewal charge created before a date pause beginsYesYes

The unused introductory period remains first in the order for a later renewal when a charge was skipped. No recurring credits or session cards are issued for a skipped renewal.

See Membership pauses for the difference between benefit-only and payment-pausing arrangements.

Deactivating unused introductory pricing

Open the membership's Members list, choose Manage member, and open Discounted periods. The member's automatic introductory pricing appears in Pricing order.

You can select Deactivate while periods remain unused. Deactivation:

  • prevents all remaining periods in that entry from being used;
  • does not change introductory charges already created;
  • does not add a replacement period;
  • allows the next active price in the order, or the normal membership price, to apply.

Used and already deactivated entries cannot be deactivated again. To give the member a different temporary price, add a new goodwill entry rather than editing the old one.

Changing the membership's introductory offer

Editing the membership changes the offer for future eligible members only. Existing members keep the introductory periods already assigned to them, their normal recurring price, and their existing commitment.

If an existing member needs a correction, review their Discounted periods, deactivate the unused entry if appropriate, and add a new goodwill price for the intended future periods.
