AI search

How to show up when people ask ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and other AI assistants where to play.

More and more people ask an AI assistant instead of searching, for example "where can I play padel in Espoo tonight?". Optimising for these answers is sometimes called GEO (generative engine optimisation).

The good news: the same basics work

Google says there are no special requirements or tricks for appearing in its AI Overviews and AI Mode. The same things that work in normal search apply, and you don't need any special files or code (Google: AI features and your website).

AI assistants build their answers from what they can read on the public web. So:

  • Be clear and factual. Write your sports, number of courts, opening hours, address and prices as plain text on your website, not only inside images.
  • Be consistent. When your name, address and hours match on Google, Apple Maps, Bing, your website and Thril, assistants are more likely to repeat them correctly.
  • Be mentioned. Reviews, local news, club websites and federations that mention you all make it more likely you appear in an answer.
  • Answer common questions on your website: "Do you rent rackets?", "Is there parking?", "Can beginners join?". This is exactly the kind of question people ask assistants.

Don't

  • Don't buy fake reviews or mentions. They break platform rules and can get removed.
  • Don't fill your pages with keyword lists. It doesn't help, and search engines treat it as spam (Google).
